Improving the Welfare of Group-housed Sows Fed via Electronic Feeding

This study was designed to examine different ways of mixing sows into a large, dynamic pen equipped with electronic sow feeders. Aggression was minimal immediately following sow introduction, and different strategies for mixing sows did not affect the study’s outcomes.

Key Points:

  • Increased weight loss, lameness and skin lesions were observed after moving sows to pen gestation.
  • These measures did not negatively impact sow productivity.
  • Managing aggression when mixing sows is important to gestating sows in pens.
