Pork Profit Maximizer – Retail Edition

October 28, 2019

Ham prices used to have a much more pronounced seasonality but in the last few years, a number of factors have contributed to much more erratic price action. Last year record pork supplies and tariffs on US pork prices in Mexico and China significantly affected demand for hams. Mexico purchases about a third of all the hams we produce. Packers and exporters had to lower prices enough in order to offset the tariff impact. As the chart above shows, prices last year were generally flat. Any rallies were very short-lived as Mexican buyers would step to the sidelines and wait for the market to correct.
