Don Wick: 00:04 From the Pork Checkoff in Des Moines Iowa Pork Pod! Pork Pod, a look at the hot topics in today’s pork industry. The Pork Checkoff is working for you through various forms of research promotion and consumer information projects. This is Don Wick speaking on behalf of the Pork Checkoff. And today our guest is Chris Hostetler who is the Director of Animal Science for the National Pork Board. The National Pork Board is announcing the opening of the application period for the 2018 pork industry scholarships. Chris give us an idea on the size and scope of this program.

Chris Hostetler: 00:32 Absolutely. This is the ninth year actually we’ve had this program nine consecutive year we’ve had this program and it’s really been the vision for the animal science community to help us to encourage those future leaders that are going to be involved in our industry down the road. Each year they set aside fifty thousand dollars. Forty eight thousand dollars of that budget is for scholarships. We give out 21 scholarships to top rank applicants receives a scholarship for five thousand dollars. Second place applicant gets 3500 and then the remaining 19 applicants get two thousand dollars. And you know it’s just a way for the Animal Science Committee to invest a relatively small amount of money into the future of the industry.

Don Wick: 01:23 You look at it this really is what the whole mission of building human capital for the industry.

Chris Hostetler: 01:28 Yeah absolutely. You know if we want to continue to make improvements within the swine industry we need to identify those individuals that are going to be contributors and thought leaders and involved heavily in our industry. And over time I think the scholarship program has been extremely successful in identifying those individuals selecting them and then supporting them. In fact well over 80 percent of our previous recipients of the scholarship have gone on to be involved in this swine industry somewhere north of 90 percent have gone on to be involved in agriculture, so it’s a highly successful program for the for the industry.

Don Wick: 02:16 So Chris tell me who is eligible for the scholarship?

Chris Hostetler: 02:19 We’re looking for college juniors and seniors so currently they have to have a college rank of at least a junior. We are especially interested in those individuals who are interested in going into production so they have evidence that they’re going to work in swine production in some way shape or form. We are very interested in applicants who are planning to continue their education as either a graduate student or a veterinary student and have evidence that they’re planning on going down that down those paths. And of course we’re interested in people that have a swine emphasis or at least a heavy interest in swine and being involved in the industry.

Don Wick: 03:06 When you look at that list of past recipients there really is some tremendous talent being seen here.

Chris Hostetler: 03:11 Absolutely. You know when you reach down through the list of previous winners you know those individuals have ended up being swine nutritionists or swine geneticist for various production companies. They’ve ended up running feed mills for the large production companies or you know working in production as a grower themselves. And so it’s just a who’s who when you read down to that list of previous winners. And you know I think it’s just speaks to the nature of the vision that Animal Science Committee has had for that program.

Don Wick: 03:52 What’s the deadline for application?

Chris Hostetler: 03:54 They have until February 16th of 2018 to complete their application. It’s really a three part application. We require two letters of recommendation. We require official transcripts from each of the institutions that the students have attended or are attending and we require that they fill out an online application. They can find that online application at www.pork.org and search for scholarship or 2018 scholarship and it should pop right up.
