U.S. pig farmers, the National Pork Board, the National Pork Producers Council and state pork associations kicked off the third annual Hams Across America campaign on November 27, 2018. The program’s goal is to highlight the many diverse product donations the pork industry makes throughout the year.

On “Giving Tuesday,” the Iowa Pork Producers Association served a delicious and nutritious breakfast to 300 clients of the Central Iowa Shelter and Services. Plates were filled with bacon, eggs, pancakes and fresh fruit with the help of Fareway Meat and Grocery as well.

Just this week, the Illinois Pork Producers Association partnered with Smithfield Foods and Prairie Fresh Pork to donate 90,000 pounds of pork product to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. This donation celebrates the We CareSM ethical principal of community and 10th year of the Illinois Pork Power program.

Several more events will be held in partnership throughout the giving season, including:

  • 7 – Oklahoma Pork, packing and distributing backpacks for needy students as part of their Pork for Packs program;
  • 10 – North Carolina Pork, a large product donation will be made to the Central and Eastern North Carolina Food Bank;
  • 12 – Pennsylvania Pork will partner with the Harrisburg Police Department to hand out holiday food boxes to individuals in the city;
  • 14 – Nebraska Pork will donate hams to homeless shelters in the Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska area.

The campaign will also highlight Minnesota Pork Producers Association Oink Outings Food Bank Donations, Ohio Pork Council’s social media challenge for producers to pay-it-forward, as well as many other stories from across the industry. Visit RealPigFarming.com to follow along.

Pig farmers and those involved in the pork industry are encouraged to participate by purchasing a gift of ham and paying it forward to loved ones and those in need. Participants are also encouraged to share their pay-it-forward stories on social media using #RealPigFarming and #HamsAcrossAmerica.
