  • Many of the public concerns and policy debates about farm animal welfare have generally focused on intensive housing systems.
  • This focus on housing systems has often distracted us from some of the important considerations in safeguarding farm animal welfare.
  • Indeed I suggest that the design and management of the housing systems is probably more important for animal welfare than is generally recognized.
  • Therefore, my aim today is to review the welfare implications of some aspects of the design and management of group housing of gestating sows.
