Committee: Nutrition
Chair: Mark Reding Primary NPB Staff Liaison: Ceci Snyder
Departmental Connection Demand Enhancement
Committee Charge:
The Pork Checkoff’s Nutrition Committee oversees nutrition research which
advances the demand for pork. Nutrition research at the National Pork Board is
managed within the Demand Enhancement department, with both planning and
publicity based on the end-consumer target. Committee members do not need a
background in human nutrition or marketing, but an interest in the promotion of
pork as part of a healthful lifestyle is helpful. The Committee was restarted
in 2005 based on the Board members’ insight regarding the need for nutrition
research to support demand and assist policy mandates of the NPPC. Currently,
research has covered a reanalysis of the pork’s nutrient content (with the
University of Wisconsin and the USDA) and a weight loss study (with Purdue
University). The Committee sets research priorities – with the assistance of
NPB staff and a nutrition research consultant – and votes on research
proposals.
