PEDV Update - January 2013

Practical Time and Temperature Options to Curb PEDV

In a perfect world, all truck and trailers transporting hogs would be washed, disinfected and dried after every load. But since that’s not the case. What are the workable alternatives as we face Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV)? Pork Checkoff funded research at Iowa State University to get some answers.
“We were looking for alternatives between the full-blown-- washing, disinfecting and drying trailers—and doing nothing,” says Derald Holtkamp, DVM, Iowa State University. “We didn’t have any alternatives in the middle that would work to at least reduce the risk of PEDV exposure, if not eliminate it entirely.”
Having a practical alternative is particularly important for vehicles transporting market hogs and cull sows. For learn more about the results, click here.

Pork Checkoff: Committed to Ongoing PEDV Research

Immediately following the discovery of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) in the United States, the Pork Checkoff made funding research on the virus a No.1 priority.
The first round of Pork Checkoff research focused on epidemiology, diagnostic issues, pathogenicity and temperature and time options to inactivate the virus within trailers. Now with phase two underway, researchers will concentrate on how the virus acts within the sow herd, how to manage it and how to best establish immunity. Phase three proposals will be selected in mid-February and will address biosecurity protocols, including appropriated own times for people entering hog facilities.
